Bäume sind eine wichtige Ressource, da sie dem Spieler substanzielle Materialien wie Baumstämme und Stöcker liefern. Bäume kommen in verschiedenen Größen vor: Große und mittelgroße Bäume liefern Baumstämme und Harz, kleine Bäume und Jungbäume liefern Stöcker und Blätter.
Gameplay[ | ]
Die dünnen Jungbäume (engl. Saplings) können mit allen Waffen und Werkzeugen gefällt werden, wobei automatisch Blätter eingesammelt werden. Jungbäume wachsen nach dem Neuladen eines Spielstandes nach. Sie können in der Wildnis auch zum Tarnen vor Gegnern verwendet werden.
Große Bäume hingegen haben einen sehr dicken Stamm und lassen sich mit einer Axt oder Kettensäge fällen. Die Stärke des Spielers beeinflusst nicht, wie viele Hiebe benötigt werden um einen Baum zu fällen. Die Fallrichtung von Bäumen kann durch den Standpunkt des Spielers, durch die Steigung des Terrains und durch Springen gegen den fallenden Baum beeinflusst werden. Ein fallender Baum kann Gegnern, fertiggestellten Gebäuden oder dem Spieler selbst Schaden zufügen. Mutanten reagieren zum Teil aggressiv, wenn sie dich Bäume fällen sehen. Beim Fällen sammelt der Spieler automatisch Baumharz ein. Eine effektivere Möglichkeit zum Sammeln von Harz bietet der Baumharzsammler.
Je nach Waffe und Baumart benötigt man eine unterschiedliche Anzahl an Schlägen:

Große Bäume wachsen in der Regel nur sehr langsam nach, deshalb ist auf ein sorgfältiges Ressourcenmanagement zu achten. Standardmäßig wachsen 10% aller Bäume beim Schlafen nach, dies kann in den Einstellungen jedoch auch abgeschaltet werden. Bäume wachsen jedoch niemals nach, wenn der Baumstumpf nach dem Fällen ebenfalls entfernt wird. Unter einigen Bäumen spawnen regelmäßig ein paar Stöcke, bis der Baum gefällt wird. Wenn das Nachwachsen von Bäumen deaktiviert wurde, verhindert dies also auch das Spawnen von Stöckern um gefällte Bäume herum. In Gebieten ohne kleine Bäume oder Jungbäume kann es sich lohnen, ein paar Bäume am Leben zu lassen.

Bekannte Bugs[ | ]
- Manchmal drehen sich gefällte Bäume nicht um 90° auf den Boden, sondern um weniger als 45° (d. h. sie bleiben nahezu aufrecht). Der Baum fällt kontinuierlich und die Bewegungsunschärfe-Effekte werden ebenfalls unendlich lange abgespielt.
- Manchmal fällt ein Baum nicht auf den Boden, sondern bleibt komplett aufrecht stehen. Das Geräusch eines fallenden Baumes ist dauerhaft zu hören und die einzelnen Teile des Baumstammes stehen in der Luft aufeinander.
